MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers swept the Nova Southeastern Sharks 8-1 and 3-1 in a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday night to solidify their hold on first place in the conference.
In the first game, Taylor Sabol (9-4) tossed her first career no-hitter to earn her ninth win. She was effectively wild, as she walked seven, but did not allow a hit. Her one run allowed was unearned in the first inning.
Dee Espinosa provided the offense for the Bucs, going 4-for-4 with five RBI. She belted her team-leading eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third, had an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run single in the sixth. Cheyanne Head was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Hunter went 2-for-2 and scored once. Megan Copeland, who walked three times, scored twice.
Taylor Rotz (1-4) took the loss for the Sharks (14-20, 2-13 SSC). She allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.
In the second game, Haley Wiseman (13-5) worked the complete game for the win. She allowed one run on six hits and two walks and struck out two.
The Bucs did all their damage off NSU starter Rebecca Thornton (11-9) in the third inning. Mars had a one-out single and went to second on a ground out by Copeland. Gallagher reached on a fielder's choice when the Sharks tried unsuccessfully to catch Mars off of second. Mars scored on a dropped pop up by NSU third baseman Maegan Lee and both Gallagher and Espinosa moved up the third and second respectively when Lee threw the ball away at home. Julie Brito rocketed a double into the gap in right center to score both runners.
Thornton took the loss for the second time in the series. None of her three runs were earned and she struck out seven while holding the Bucs to six hits and a walk.
The Bucs play another SSC series this week, traveling to Boca Raton, Fla., to face the Lynn Fighting Knights on Saturday and Sunday.
