KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Something is clicking for this Barry University women's basketball team.
Barry beat Eckerd, 61-59, in overtime Saturday in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinals at Silver Spurs Arena. The Buccaneers (15-15) will play No. 24 Nova Southeastern (23-5) in Sunday's 1 p.m. championship game on ESPN3.
Ashley Lutz banked in the gamewinner with 0.3 seconds left as the Bucs beat the Tritons (23-7) for the second time this season to send Barry to the SSC title game for the first time since 2010. The Bucs won the title in 1990-91.
"I was just so happy," said Lutz, who finished with nine points. "I had been missing the whole game so for my team to just put their trust in me one more time, and go out and finish for them, it's just …"
The Buccaneers have become the cardiac kids in this postseason tournament, beating two 20-win teams. Seventh-seeded Barry and third-seeded Eckerd battled through 14 ties and 12 lead changes. It was the second overtime win for the Bucs this season. Neither team led by more than four in the second half.
"We just wanted to keep it close there towards the end and give ourselves a chance, and that's exactly what happened," Barry coach
Bill Sullivan said. "I'm just so proud of these young ladies.
"(Eckerd is) just so hard to defend. We were fortunate. They missed some shots, and we were a little bit lucky there at the end. We'll sure take it. It's happened enough the other way around, where we're on the other end of it."
Eckerd's Rana Thomas hit a three-pointer with 9:48 left in regulation to give the Tritons a 44-40 lead.
Amra Elezovic sank two free throws at the 6:25 mark as the Bucs tied it up, 46-46. After Barry's
Kaila Britten sank one of two free throws with 3:58 to play to put the Buccaneers ahead by two, Eckerd's Ivana Grbic split a pair from the line, and Victoria Vine canned a three to push the Tritons up, 53-51.
Elezovic hit a running layup with 2:00 on the clock to tie the game for the 11
th time. Grbic scored in the paint at the 1:38 mark, but Elezovic answered 26 seconds later, and neither team scored on alternating possessions the rest of the way to force overtime.
Elezovic went six of 11 from the field, and also had two steals.
"We just came in with the mentality it's the playoffs, everyone's 0-0, we got a fresh chance to show them how good we can actually be," Elezovic said. "We're taking full advantage of that."
Barry's
Kaylia Richardson scored on a putback 1:09 into overtime to give the Bucs a two-point lead. Eckerd's Jordyn Alexander, who finished with 17 points, tied the game for the 13
th time 19 seconds later. Elezovic converted on Barry's next possession, but Grbic, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds, tied the game with 19 seconds left.
That set the stage for Lutz, who worked the clock down before banking in an off-balance shot from the wing.
"We're still not satisfied," Lutz said. "We're going to keep pushing."
The Bucs led 14-7 on a triple by Lutz with 12:07 left in the first half before going cold over a 6:58 span. Eckerd used a 16-2 run to take a 10-point lead. But the Buccaneers ended the half with an 8-0 spurt over the final 2:49 to pull within two at the break.
Barry's
Jackie Perez scored nine of her 12 points in the first half. She also had eight rebounds. Elezovic finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Richardson had eight points and two blocks, and Britten eight points and seven boards.
Nyjah Porcher had six points, seven rebounds and three steals.
"It feels really good," Porcher said. "Everybody looks at us as the underdog. We're happy that we made it now. We have one more thing to prove."
