MIAMI SHORES, Fla,--The Barry Buccaneers walked off with a pair of wins over the Florida Southern Moccasins in Sunshine State Conference softball action on Saturday at Buccaneer Field, winning the first game 6-5 in 11 innings and taking the second game 3-2 in eight innings.
In the first game, Hunter Mars singled in Ashley Fernandez with two outs in the 11th inning as the Buccaneers (18-5, 6-0 SSC) won 6-5.
The Mocs (11-14, 0-6 SSC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Maggie Roberts drove in Gianni Aartidiello and Jordyn Alexander with a two-out single up the middle.
Barry chipped a run off the lead in the second on an RBI single by Megan Copeland, and took the lead, 4-2, on a three-run home run by Fernandez.
But the Mocs responded again in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two out. Kylee Stearns tripled to right to drive in all three runners and the Mocs led 5-4.
Barry knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dee Espinosa singled to center field and advanced to second on an error. Fernandez ripped a liner down the left-field line to tie the game.
Haley Wiseman (10-2) picked up the win in relief of Taylor Sabol. Wiseman worked three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk. Sabol, in eight innings, allowed five runs (two earned) on nine hits and three walks and struck out five.
Brandi Jones took the loss for the Mocs. She worked 4.2 innings in relief of starter Hannah Loyer. She allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits and a walk. She struck out four.
In the second game, Kristina Pazienza lined the first pitch she saw from Jones over the left-field wall for a walk off homer in the eighth inning. The game was halted for 90 minutes in the sixth inning due to rain.
Barry also scored single runs in the first and fifth innings. In the first, Espinosa drove in Copeland with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Copeland tied the game at 2-2 with a RBI double, scoring Cheyanne Head.
The Mocs briefly grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Roberts singled and Jessica Lanci and Cierra Lacey drew walks off of Wiseman to load the bases. Sabol came on in relief and Kim Booker greeted her with a single to score pinch runner Andrea Faison. Alexander drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded to put FSC up 2-1.
Sabol (5-3) earned the win with five stellar innings in relief of Wiseman. She allowed five hits and three walks and struck out two, but did not allow a run.
Jones, who took all three losses in the series, worked 2.2 innings in relief of Loyer again. She allowed just the one run to Pazienza and two other hits. She walked one.
Copleand led the Bucs with four hits, including two doubles. Fernandez and Pazienza each had three hits. Stearns led the Mocs with five hits and three RBI.
The Bucs play on Saturday, Mar. 14 at St. Thomas in a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
