MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University shook off the rust and dusted Florida Memorial aside in Friday night's season opener at the Health & Sports Center, winning 96-56.
A near capacity crowd watched the No. 12-ranked Buccaneers open a 52-29 halftime lead on a night
Yunio Barrueta made history. The Buccaneers shot 48.7 percent in the first half, and cruised to a 40-point win.
Barrueta, a preseason All-American, finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds to become the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. He shot 8 of 13 from the floor, knocking down three triples, and had three steals in 22 minutes.
The Bucs held the Lions (2-1) to 28.6 percent shooting. Florida Memorial was 20 of 70 from the field. Samuel Dorismond had 11 points, and Aundre Reid 10 for the Lions.
Four players scored in double figures for Barry, including newcomer
Marko Tomic, who had a nice coming out party with 15 points and five rebounds.
Undra Mitchem added 10 points and five boards, and
Adrian Gonzalez had 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.Â
The Bucs never trailed in the game, and built a 23-point lead in the first half when Barrueta knocked down a triple with 4:56 remaining. The Bucs opened the second half with a 14-2 run, capped off by another Barrueta 3-pointer to take a 66-31 lead less than four minutes into the half.
Theo Turner's layup at the 10:58 mark made it a 40-point lead.
Barry new point guard
Elvar Fridriksson had five assists, seven points and two steals.
Anders Haas scored eight points, and had four assists.
The Buccaneers forced 25 turnovers, coming away with 15 steals.Â
Barry will play at defending national champion Florida Southern Wednesday in Lakeland.
