LAKELAND, Fla. – The second-seeded Barry University softball team (38-12) fell to the loser's bracket with a 4-1 loss to the #3 seed Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (50-15) in the second round of the NCAA South Region tournament hosted at Barnett Field by Florida Southern College on Friday.

 

Barry defeated Alabama-Huntsville earlier this season 3-2, but the Chargers managed to come out on top in the rematch at the regional tournament. Heading into the fifth inning, the Buccaneers were the only team to come up with a hit in the pitching duel. Finally, Jenny Hess broke the Chargers hitless streak with a two-out double to left center. UAH collected three more hits in the inning and scored twice for a 2-0 lead.

 

In the sixth, the Buccaneers cut the lead to one run. Shyla Rider (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) led off with a single and later scored on Maile Keeney's (Jr., Longwood, Fla.) RBI fielder's choice. In the top half of the seventh, Alabama-Huntsville posted another four-hit two-run inning ignited by Hess's second double of the game. The Chargers held on for the 4-1 win.

 

Both Hess and Mary Ferris notched a pair of hits to lead the Chargers at the plate, while Ferris scored twice and added an RBI. The Bucs picked up four singles on the day from Rider, Ashley Loose (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.), Kim Fujimoto (Sr., Carmichael, Calif.) and Katie Arnone (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

 

Ramie Garcia (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out five to fall to 17-5 on the season. Amber Jack (Fr., Homestead, Fla.) hurled one inning of two-hit shutout relief. Sage Woodham (24-5) picked up the win for Alabama-Huntsville giving up four hits, one run and struck out six with no walks.

 

The Buccaneers fall to the loser's bracket and will play North Alabama at 11 am on Saturday, May 13 facing elimination. Alabama-Huntsville advances in the winner's bracket to face Florida Southern at 4:30 pm.
