The Barry University's rowing team, in just its fifth year of competition, won its first-ever Sunshine State Conference Women's Rowing Championship in 1999.
Under first-year head coach Paul Mokha, the Buccaneers amassed 68 points, 16 points ahead of second-place Tampa (52 points). Florida Tech and Rollins tied for third with 20 points. Barry won four of the five events it entered, and finished second in the other.
In the premier race of the day, the varsity eight, Barry won in a time of 6:40, 12 seconds faster than second-place Tampa, who finished in a time of 6:52. Rowers on the Buccaneers' varsity eight were: Monica Espinoza, Leisl Jeffers, Jessica Macedo, Jenny Nilsson, Christie Mendoza, Elizabeth Kavel, Christine Riedinger, Andrea Santora and the coxswain was Winoah Henry.
The Buccaneers also won the novice four, the novice eight, the junior varsity eight, and finished second behind Florida Tech in the varsity four.
