ORLANDO -- Barry freshman keeper Marlen Hernandez was named the Sunshine State Conference defensive player of the week for Sept. 22-28.
Hernandez allowed zero goals while making 14 saves in Barry's standoffs against Palm Beach Atlantic and Rollins. The Austin, Texas native tallied 10 saves in the 0-0 result against PBA, including saves on two shots into the upper 90 and a point-blank rebound. Hernandez faced 15 total shots and nine Sailfish corner kicks in the match. Hernandez then helped the Buccaneers earn a point in the SSC standings with four saves while facing nine total shots and three corners in a 0-0 match against Rollins.
For Hernandez, it is her first conference award and the first award for the team this season. Maya Caon and Fernanda Mayrink both earned defensive player of the week last season.
The Bucs continue SSC play this week, facing PBA on the road on Wednesday and Embry-Riddle at home on Saturday.
