Full Team Effort Propels Volleyball to Five Set Victory

Barry picks up 19th win of the season in first five set victory of the year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.   The Buccaneer women's volleyball team picks up their first five-set victory of the season on the road at the ICI Center Friday evening, against Sunshine State foe Embry-Riddle. Barry found a way to get it done in all facets of the game to get their third straight victory over the Eagles. It is the sixth time the Bucs sweep the season series over ERAU, first since 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Thalia Iglesias opened the match with a service ace that sparked a 3-0 early lead for Barry. After being up 11-7, the Bucs gave up a 6-0 run to ERAU who then flipped the scoreboard to make it 13-11. It was a back and forth battle that saw the Bucs tie it twice. However, Embry-Riddle ran off with the set win and took the match lead. | ERAU 25, Barry 22
  • Set Two -  Barry once again garnered the first point in the set. They took the lead and never wavered, tying the match up at one a piece. A block by Ivana Žujovic and Ester Pushkarov closed out the set. The Bucs had four blocks in the set, and Zujovic assisted in three of them. The defense forced a .077 swing percentage for thee Eagles. Valeriya Kozlova's present was felt with nine kills on 11 attempts with no errors for a .818 hit percentage. | Barry 25, ERAU 17
  • Set Three - The block party continued with Zujovic getting a block solo to start out the set. Barry however fell behind early and never recovered. The offense struggled and hit just .143, the defense remained consistent with four more blocks. Barry had an extra earned point in the set compared to the Eagles but six attacking errors, a set error, and two service errors would gift away the set. It ws the first third set thee Bucs have dropped all year. | ERAU 25, Barry 22
  • Set Four - For the first time in the match, ERAU scored first. This set saw 10 ties and five lead changes. After a 10-10 tie, thee Bucs scored two straight points and were able to hold advantage the rest of the set. The brick wall continued to grow with five blocks now in the set for Barry. Sofya Sinkova and Pushkarov each had a hand in three of them, forcing the Eagles to anther sub .100 hitting average. | Barry 25, ERAU 22
  • Set Five - It all came down to the fifth set where Barry was 0-2 thus far this season. Barry had match point at 14-11, but ERAU would not go away, scoring four straight to flip the script and hold match point themselves. Barry scored three straight with Kozlova picking up a kill and service ace, meanwhile Varvara Ossychenko came in and shut the door. | Barry 17, ERAU 15

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Valeriya Kozlova picked up her 14th double-digit kill performance.
  • She set a new career high with 36 kills, it is tied for sixth most in program history for a five-set match, and 10th most overall in a match.
  • Her 40 points in the match is sixth most in a match in program history.
  • The team 17 blocks is sixth most in a five-set match in program history. It is also a season-high for the team. 
  • Varvara Osychenko came in clutch with her fifth double-digit kill performance collecting 12.
  • Ester Pushkarov tied her career-high of eight blocks on the season.
  • Ivana Žujovic lead the block party with nine.
  • Both setters recorded a double-double. 
  • Thalia Iglesias had her 10th career double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs.
  • Petra Brkicic had 30 assists and 10 digs, for her fourth career double-double.
  • Alondra Lebron had 12 digs and six assist to lead the liberos.
  • Statistically, Barry won every category dominating in blocks 17-7.
