MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Buccaneer rowing team hits the water this fall, looking to follow up a strong spring season.

The first regatta of the fall will be in the Bucs' backyard in Miami Beach, Fla., with the Head of the Indian Creek on Saturday, Oct. 12. The 4,000-meter race is hosted by the Miami Beach Rowing Club. The field features a strong group of local teams in the University of Miami, Stetson, and Nova Southeastern. Last year. the Bucs placed second in the first Varsity Eight only finishing behind Miami.

The Bucs scored an invitation to the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 20. The three-mile race is the largest 2-day regatta in the world, with over 11,000 athletes competing in 61 different variations of the race. The Bucs had a stellar showing in 2018, grabbing 2nd out of 40 entries in the women's collegiate 4+, only finishing behind conference rival Florida Tech. The second varsity four finished 17th in the same race. This is Barry's sixth straight appearance at the event.

The Bucs round out their fall schedule with a trip to Deland, Fla., to compete in the Stetson Hatter Invitational. The Bucs dominated last season's iteration of the invitational, taking first in both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four, taking out SSC opponents Embry-Riddle and Nova-Southeastern in the process.

"The fall is a great time for us to get everyone on the same page, and to test our legs a little bit at some fun venues," said head coach Nick Johnson, "Indian Creek is always a good opener for us before we head up to Boston for HOCR, which is our biggest regatta every fall. The Hatter Invitational has turned into a very unique race for a bunch of us here in Florida, and it's a great way to close out our fall season."

"We're excited for another busy October," said assistant coach Travis Day, "Returning to these same three races gives us some surefire goals. We'll be in good shape to go after a win in the first eight at home and be in the fight for a Charles gold after a silver last year. There's a lot of new blood on the team this year so we're ready to put them to the test."
