Men's Basketball's Barrueta and Fridriksson Named to SSC Golden Anniversary Team

Yunio Barrueta and Elvar Fridrikkson named to SSC 50th Anniversary Team

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced their 'Golden Anniversary' Team for Men's Basketball to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the league. This team consists of 14 student-athletes and one head coach who played in the conference from 2000-2025. Two Barry Buccaneers made the team, Yunio Barrueta (2013-16) and Elvar Fridriksson (2015-18).

To be considered for the Golden Anniversary 2000-25 squad, student-athletes had to meet one of several criteria. They must have been named SSC Player of the Year, selected to the SSC Hall of Fame, or received at least an Honorable Mention All-America distinction between the 2000-01 and 2024-25 seasons. The top players from the past 25 years were selected by the head athletic communication directors from the 11 SSC member institutions.

Barrueta joined the Buccaneers for the 2013-14 season and played a total of three seasons in Miami Shores. The accolades never stopped for the Miami-native earning All-American honors in his last two seasons. In his senior season, Barrueta was named a Basketball Times, D2SIDA, DII Bulletin, and NABC All-American, the most honors in the category for any Buccaneer in program history. The guard was an All-SSC and All-Region selection in his three years, while earning major conference awards as the Newcomer of the Year in 2013-14 and Player of the Year in 2015-16. Barrueta was named the Barry Male Athlete of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016.

Statistically, Barrueta remains the all-time leader in five categories: points (1781), rebounds (858), rebounding average (9.3), defensive rebounds (642), and defense rebound average (7.0). He has the second highest scoring average (19.4) and field goals made (645) and holds eight more records in the top-5. For a single season, Barrueta holds nine top spots the most impressive, scoring 804 points in his senior year averaging 24.4. Barrueta also holds three of the six 40-point games in program history and is tied for most 3-point field goals made at 10.

Barrueta has played professionally for the last 11 seasons in Belgium, France, Israel, and Spain. He helped Leyma Coruña get promoted from the Spanish LEB-Gold (Second Division) to Liga Endesa (Top Division) in the 2023-24 season.

Elvar Fridriksson was also an impact player for the Buccaneers, picking up where Barrueta left off in the next two seasons. The duo played together for one year in 2015-16, Fridriksson then stayed until 2017-18. He was named a DII Bulletin All-American twice and earned D2SIDA and Basketball Times honors his senior year. The guard was named to the NABC Honors Court for his academic and athletic excellence. Fridriksson was a two-time All-Region and two-time All-SSC member. The Iceland-native won three conference awards being named the back-to-back Player of the Year in 2016-17 and 2017-18 as well as the Newcomer of the Year in 2015-16. He was named the Barry Male Athlete of the Year in 2018.

In his first year as a Buccaneer, Fridriksson was the NCAA Division II Individual Statistical Champion for total assists (267) and assists per game (8.1). Elvar has the second most points scored in a game at 43 and tied for tenth most with 37. For his career, he owns three program records in assists (697), assists average (7.7), and free throws made (312).

Fridriksson has also enjoyed a professional career in Europe, playing in France, Israel, Sweden, Lithuania, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Poland over the past nine years, mostly in the first division.

Combined, the two Buccaneers have played a part in five of the eight NCAA DII Tournament appearances. Both being a part of the program's first ever South Regional Championship team advancing onto the Elite 8. Fridriksson then did it again in his senior season. They both were a part of the most wins in program history in 2015-16 with 26. The Bucs won three straight conference titles in that span from 2016-2018. The duo are the only two Barry men's basketball players to win Newcomer of the Year.
