Fright Night Ends With Volleyball Victory Over Tritons

A four set thriller leads Barry past Eckerd on hallow's eve

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.   On hallow's eve, the Buccaneer Women's Volleyball team welcomed in the Tritons from St. Peterseburg into the rocky waters. Barry prevailed after dropping the second set, taking eight extra points in the fourth set to take it.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Eckerd grabbed the first point of the set for their only lead of the set. A Triton service error tied the game and flipped the scoreboard than then tilted in favor of Barry. Valeriya Kozlova found a new way to earn her first point in the set, this time via a block solo. A 8-1 run closed out the set as Veronika Eremeeva held service for seven of those points. A hairline service error end the set and gave the Bucs the match lead. Barry hit .611 in the set with 12 kills and one attacking error. The defense had two blocks and forced a .120 hit percentage. | Barry 25, Eckerd 12
  • Set Two - Kozlova got back to collecting the first Buccaneer point via a kill. Eckerd had a 5-0 run that gave them the lead at 8-5. The lead continued to expand throughout the set as they went on to take it 25-17 to tie the match up. Eckerd hit .500 in the set with 19 kills. | Eckerd 25, Barry 17
  • Set Three - This set saw 12 score ties and eight lead changes. The Buccaneers scored eight straight points to recover and take the lead at 24-18. Back to back blocks from Ester Pushkariv and Thalia Iglesias help set the tone for the run. An attack error ended the set and the Bucs regained the match lead at 2-1. The defense stepped up for four blocks and pushing a .053 hit percentage for the Tritons. They had 10 attacking errors total in the set. | Barry 25, Eckerd 119
  • Set Four - This set started yet again with a Kozlova kill as Barry opened up with a 3-0 lead. Ivana Zujovic had back to back service aces in the process. Eckerd came back and had as big as a four-point lead at 16-12 in the set. The Bucs locked in and countered with a 5-0 streak to get back on top of the Tritons. Kozlova had three straight kills in the run and a block assist. The Bucs fended off set point and then had seven match point opportunities before finally converting. | Barry 33, Eckerd 31

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Valeriya Kozlova had her 12th straight double-digit kill performance with a match-high 24.
  • Of her 24 kills, 14 came in the fourth set out of the Bucs 21 kills as a team.
  • Veronika Eremeeva had a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs.
  • Thalia Iglesias anchored the offense with 39 assists to tie her season-high. She also recorded a double-double with 14 digs to lead the team.
  • Barry hit .323 in the match and held Eckerd to a .184 hit percentage. 
  • Statistically, the Bucs won every category except service aces, but dominated in blocks 12-2.
  • The Bucs sweep the season series and have won four matches in a row against the Tritons.

The Buccaneers will have senior day tomorrow at the Health and Sports Center with first serve at 4:00 p.m. against Rollins.
