Marya Morusiewicz, in many ways, is the quintessential Buccaneer. Marya’?s accomplishments on the court and in the classroom are nothing short of stunning. One of 10 national finalists for the 1996 NCAA Woman of the Year, Marya was the 1997 winner of the NCAA?s prestigious $10,000 Walter Byers Post-Graduate Scholarship, awarded to the top student-athlete in Division I, II or III. She was the Florida NCAA Woman of the Year in 1996, a three-time GTE Academic All-American in volleyball, and the Sunshine State Conference?s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1996.
Morusiewicz, a native of Sarasota, Fla., was also a three-time Barry Scholar Athlete of the Year, a four-time selection to the SSC All-Academic team, and graduated from Barry with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Athletically, she was captain of Barry’?s 1995 NCAA National Championship volleyball team, was First Team All-South Regional All-Tournament selection in 1995 and Honorable Mention All-SSC also in 1995. A superb citizen, Morusiewicz had a remarkable record of community service at Barry, including being President of the Barry Athletic Trainer’?s Association, BUCS Tutors, Habitat for Humanity, Campus Ambassador, Easter Seals and the Sarasota Therapy Center Volunteer, among many others. Marya furthered her studies at the University of Miami, for a master’?s degree in Physical Therapy.
