Kertria Lofton put Barry women’?s basketball on the national map with her incredible play as a point guard in 1990-91, when the Buccaneers won the Sunshine State Conference regular season and post-season tournament titles. Barry was 26-4 and a perfect 12-0 in SSC play in 1991. Lofton was named an AWSF All-American in 1989-90 and 1990-91. She also was the SSC’?s Player of the Year in 1991, while earning NCAA All-West All-Tournament and All-SSC All-Tournament honors that season. Lofton was voted Barry’?s Athlete of the Year in 1990-91. She ranks in the top 10 in six Barry career categories, despite playing only two seasons. She is the all-time leader in assists per game at 8.7.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., she holds single-season records for assists (279) and steals (153). She became an assistant women’?s basketball coach at Division I Florida International University. Lofton also was an assistant for three years at Lynn University. Lofton remained a competitive player after graduation, serving as an alternate for the WNBA World Champion Houston Comets in 1997.
