Jon Samford bridged the tenures of coaches Herb Dunning and Steve McCrath, helping build the Buccaneers into the powerhouse program they became. After two seasons playing and a red-shirt season, Samford led the Bucs to an outstanding season under first-year coach McCrath in 1998, leading the team in assists. In 1999, he became Barry’s first men’s soccer All-American by the NSCAA, posting his best season with five goals and six assists as the Bucs hosted the NCAA Division II championship for the first time. He ranks seventh in game’s started and is tied for 15th in career assists. He led the team to the 1999 national semifinals and was a two-time All-Sunshine State Conference pick.
