Rowing Adds Four To The Class of 2022

Bucs continue to stock up on talent for the fall

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry's rowing program keeps growing as the team signed four incoming freshman to the Class of 2022 for the fall, announced by head coach Nick Johnson.

"The Class of 2021 was one of the largest and most talented that Barry Rowing has ever had, and this Class of 2022 is certainly going to help that group lay a foundation for the future of this program," Johnson said. "These four athletes have big shoes to fill, as we are losing some key members after this spring, but I know they are all up to the task, and we are hoping to add to their numbers with another recruit or two during the spring period. Overall, we are thrilled to have them joining us this coming fall, and we can't wait to see them wearing red and black."

The first signee for the fall is Ruby Dudley. Dudley hails from Ann Arbor, Mich., and stands at 5'8". She's a senior at Skyline High School and rows for Kit Bennett and former Barry Rowing volunteer assistant coach Robert Saner.

"Ruby is going to be a great contributor here, both on the water and in the classroom," Johnson said.  "She is relatively new to the sport and has a lot of room to grow, but she will fit in with this group right from day one. She comes from a very athletic family, and you can see that in her strong rowing abilities."

"I chose Barry because I believe it has so many opportunities for me such as rowing and nursing, Dudley said. "I also will not be complaining about the warm weather!"

The next recruit is Lana Sumner-Borema, a 5'11" native of Jacksonville, Fla. She currently attends Bartram Trail HS and rows for Ronnie Evans at Evans Rowing Club.

"Lana is long and lean, and has a very similar rowing style to what we do here at Barry," Johnson said.  "She checks off all of the physical boxes that we were looking for. The new signee is also a tremendous student, and an even better person, with all of the volunteer and church work that she is involved in. She impressed all of us during her visit, and we think she will be an outstanding addition to the program next year."

"I chose Barry because I felt that its students prioritize service and community-serving fields such as social work, nursing, and education," Lana said. "I also love the water that the rowing team gets to practice on, as well as the weather and how Miami reminds me of Cuba."

Next up is Devin Mullen, a 5'11" senior from Parker Academy in Bedford, N.H. Mullen rows for Casey Clark at Bedford High School.

"Devin has a ton of potential, which we think we can help her tap into," Johnson said. She has the physicality that we look for, and we are excited about getting her on campus this fall to help her get to the next level."

"I chose Barry because the class sizes are small," Mullen said. "Therefore, I can have a strong relationship with my professors, while being part of a small, tight knit team to improve myself as an athlete."

The last of the signees is Maria Stampolkou, the only international recruit of the 2022 Class thus far. Stampolkou, standing at 5'7", comes to Barry University from the village of Mikro Monastiri, located in Thessaloniki, Greece.  She currently rows for Pantelis Papaterpos at Nautical Club of Thessaloniki.

"Maria came for a visit very early in the fall, and we were all very impressed," Johnson said. "She has won Greek championships, and even competed all over Europe. We are pretty confident that she will have an immediate impact when she arrives on campus. She has a tremendous work ethic and a great attitude that is contagious to all of us."

"The best word to describe Barry is opportunity," Stampolkou said. "It gives me the chance to continue my athletic career and study at an American university at the same time. It makes me very happy that my two biggest dreams will become true."
