Men's Basketball Moves on in SSC Tourney

Bucs beat FIT, 102-83, setting up semifinal matchup with Rollins Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team needed this win in a big way.

The Buccaneers got it, beating Florida Tech, 102-83, Wednesday in the Sunshine State Conference quarterfinals, setting up a semifinals matchup with Rollins noon Saturday at Florida Southern.

Five players scored in double figures as the Buccaneers moved within a win of reaching 20 victories for the fourth straight year.

  • Barry shot a season-best 66 percent, going 37 of 56 from the floor. The Buccaneers were 14 of 24 for 58 percent from three-point range. Florida Tech shot 44.8 percent from the field and 34 percent from long distance.
  • The Buccaneers took a 33-23 lead with 7:31 remaining in the first half when Sunday Dech scored on a layup. Marko Tomic hit a layup, and Kooper Glick canned a triple at the halftime horn to extend the lead to 19 going into the break.
  • Barry shot 72 percent in the first half, going 18 of 25 from the field.
  • The Bucs pushed their lead to 23 on Daniel Mortensen's layup 2:59 into the second half. Sawyer Glick and Kooper Glick hit back-to-back-to-back triples over a 1:06 span to push the lead to 31. Florida Tech cut the lead to 18 on a jumper by Patrick Anderson at the 6:05 mark. Dech scored to make it 91-71 before Antonis Pefanis hit a three for the Panthers to trim it to 17. But Kooper Glick scored with 2:47 to go to put it away.
  • Jordan Majors finished with 32 for the Panthers.
  • Elvar Fridriksson had 23 points and seven assists. Tomic had 16 points. Sawyer Glick scored 15, and Kooper Glick and Dech each 14. Dech led Barry with seven rebounds, and Evan Walshe six to go along with his six points.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry topped 100 points for the ninth time this season, matching the school record set by the 2015-16 team.
  • The Bucs have allowed an opponent to score over 30 points in back-to-back games.
  • The Buccaneers' 66.1 percent field goal shooting is the third best in school history. The school record is .719 vs. Puerto Rico Humaco on Dec. 12, 1999.
  • Dech has scored in double figures for four straight games.
  • Barry will be making its fourth straight appearance in the SSC semifinals.

Barry will meet Rollins in the SSC semifinals 12 p.m. Saturday in Lakeland.
