Penner Resigns As Softball Coach

Winningest coach in Barry history

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Danielle Penner has resigned as head softball coach at Barry University, it was announced today by director of athletics, Michael L. Covone.

Penner has accepted an associate head coaching position at an NCAA Division I institution for the 2017-18 school year.

For 12 seasons, Penner has directed the Buccaneer softball program, becoming the winningest coach in program history. She compiled a 404-210 overall mark, including 184-99 in the Sunshine State Conference. She led the Bucs to six NCAA Tournament bids and the 2008 SSC Championship.

In 2008, The Bucs rolled to a 44-8 mark, winning the SSC title, the South Region Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA D-II World Series. They won a school-record 35 straight, led by SSC Pitcher of the Year Amber Jack and fellow All-Americans Cristina DeTagle, Ashley Likens and Megan Young. Penner was named the SSC Coach of the Year.

Penner disciples garnered 60 All-SSC awards, including Pitcher of the Year Jack and Players of the Year Sarah Broeseker (2013) and Dee Espinosa (2015). They earned 18 All-America honors, 55 All-Region honors and 102 NFCA Scholar All-America awards.

Always at the forefront of the University mission in community engagement, Penner and members of the softball team have won the Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin Service Award in five of her 12 years.

The softball team were leaders in the classroom as well, consistently posting GPAs of 3.3 or higher during her 12 years, including a departmental high of 3.539 in the spring of 2017.

Barry will begin a national search for her replacement immediately.
