Women's Tennis Beats FIT in SSC Quarterfinals

Bucs advance to Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinals

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Barry University's women's tennis team shut out Florida Tech, 5-0, in the Sunshine State Conference quarterfinals Thursday at IMG Academy.

Sonja Larsen and Dasha Salnikova each won two matches for the Buccaneers, who moved on to Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinals.

SUMMARY:

  • Zuza Maciejewska and Verena Schmid gave the third-ranked Buccaneers a 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win over Erin Egoroff and Caroline Walter at the No. 2 doubles position.
  • Ana Pain and Larsen, who are ranked 18th in the country, rolled past Alahna Reto and Paloma Vela, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Isabel Rapisarda Calvo and Salnikova finished off the pairs sweep with an 8-2 victory over Merritt Rabson and Larissa Kiyoku at No. 3 doubles.
  • Larsen, who owns the No. 16 singles ranking in the country, had little trouble with Lauren Stuckey at No. 4 singles, winning, 6-0, 6-0. That put Barry ahead, 4-0, in the match.
  • Salnikova, who is No. 18 in the nation, closed it out with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Egoroff at No. 2 singles.  

NOTEWORTHY:

  • It was Barry's third consecutive shutout, and 14th of the season.
  • Judith Bohnenkamp, who won her first set at No. 6 singles, 6-4, before the match was decided, returned to the lineup for the first time in a month and four days. 
  • Larsen improved to 21-0 in singles.
  • Maciejewska and Schmid moved to 12-0 in singles. 
  • First-year assistant coach Steve Schram picked up his first career postseason win.


ON THE HORIZON:

Barry advanced to Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinals to play Rollins.
