Box Score TAMPA, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team's bid for a seventh straight Sunshine State Conference Championship fell short Saturday, following a 5-3 loss to Lynn.
The sixth-ranked Buccaneers (17-3) had won the league title the past six years, but came up short in the final a day after knocking off top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Saint Leo in the semifinals at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus. Barry will now sit back and await where it is headed in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and can be accessed on
NCAA.com.
The Bucs jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the No. 3 doubles duo of
Judith Bohnenkamp and
Zuza Maciejewska beat Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy, 8-2. But the Fighting Knights (21-3) won at the top two positions to grab control heading into singles.
Barry's
Ana Pain rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Carolina Cuevas at No. 4 singles to tie the match at 2-2. But Lynn won at Nos. 6 and 5 singles to take a two-point lead. Barry's No. 3-ranked
Emma Onila battled through a 6-4, 6-4 win over the 38th-ranked Mpassy at the top singles position to pull the Bucs within 4-3.
But the Fighting Knights held on in a highly-competive No. 3 singles match to wrap it up, while Barry's 25th-ranked Maciejewska was points away from pulling out a two-set win over eighth-ranked Diana Bogolili at No. 2.
It was the second time the two teams had met in the past two weeks.
