Women's Tennis Rallies to Beat No. 2 Saint Leo in SSC Semifinals

Bucs advance to meet Lynn for conference title

Box Score TAMPA, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team knocked off top seed Saint Leo, 5-4, Friday in the Sunshine State Conference semifinals at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus.

The win sent the fourth-seeded Buccaneers (17-2) to the conference finals 9 a.m. Saturday where they will meet Lynn (20-3). The Bucs are shooting for their seventh straight league tournament title. Saturday's Championship match can be followed via LIVE STATS

Down 4-3, No. 6-ranked Barry rallied to beat the second-ranked Lions (20-2) in the final two matches on the court. At No. 3 singles, 45th-ranked Sonja Larsen defeated Anastasia Wagner, 7-5, 6-2, to knot the match at 4-4. Barry's Ana Pain followed that up with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Pauline Helgesson at the No. 4 position to seal the deal.

"It was a good win for the team," Larsen said. "Ana played really good at the end. She was struggling a little at the beginning, but also her opponent was playing well. But then she was much better at the end than her opponent."

The Bucs, who lost to Saint Leo earlier in the year, fell behind 2-1 after doubles. Pain and Emma Onila cruised to an 8-2 win over Coralie Pesenti and Madeline Gauthier at No. 2 doubles in the first pairs match to finish. But the Lions won at Nos. 1 and 3 by 8-5 scores to grab control.

Onila, who is ranked third in the nation, beat 10th-ranked Isabella Robbiani, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles to tie the match at 2-2. But the Lions took the point at No. 6 singles to reclaim the lead. Barry's 15th-ranked Zuza Maciejewska defeated 16th-ranked Marine Beugre-Guyot, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to knot the match up again, this time at 3-3.

After Saint Leo won at No. 5 singles, Larsen and Pain delivered for the Bucs.

"This win was really big because we lost the last one against them, so it was a good time to beat them now," Larsen said. "We're looking forward to the finals."
