Men's Basketball Secures Co-SSC Title

No. 23 Barry knocks off No. 14 Eckerd in regular season finale

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team won a share of the Sunshine State Conference regular season title Saturday, beating Eckerd, 82-69.

The No. 23 Buccaneers (21-5, 12-4 SSC) shared the title with the No. 14 Tritons (22-6, 12-4) and Rollins. It is Barry's first co-SSC title since 2006-07. Barry will be the No. 1 seed in the SSC Tournament that begins 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a home game against Florida Southern at the Health & Sports Center.

Barry opened a 10-point lead 1:29 into the second half when Yunio Barrueta scored on a lay-in. E.J. Moody hit a 3-pointer at the 15:34 mark to pull the Tritons with five. Elvar Fridriksson scored in the paint, and sank a free throw the next trip down the floor to push the Bucs' lead back to 10. Barrueta scored with 11:38 to go to extend the lead to 12, but Jerrick Stevenson capped a 5-0 run as Eckerd cut it to seven.

Arie Williams hit two triples, the second at the 8:44 mark in which he was fouled for a four-point play, to push Barry's lead to 61-50. Fridriksson scored to give the Bucs their largest lead at 13 with 8:06 remaining. Kevin Walsh canned a three at the 5:09 mark to bring the Tritons within eight. Stevenson sank two free throws with 1:20 left to cut it to six, but Adrian Gonzalez scored and converted a three-point play on a dish from Barrueta with 50 seconds to go to make it a nine-point game.

Williams sank four free throws down the stretch as Barry held on.

The Buccaneers went 14-0 at home in the regular season. It is the first time in school history Barry went unbeaten in the regular season.

Barrueta finished with 22 points and six rebounds. He hit three triples to break Cliff DuBois' season record set in 1997-98. Barrueta has 90 3-pointers this season. Barry was 6 of 17 from 3-point range Saturday, and went just 1 of 9 in the first half.

Tray Leonard had 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Fridriksson scored 15 points and had nine assists. Gonzalez scored 13 points, and Williams had 11. Drushaun McLaurn had 16 points and six rebounds for Eckerd. Stevenson scored 12.
