Women's Golf Ties Program-Best Finish At Championship

CONOVER, N.C.—The Barry Buccaneers tied a program best finish at the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship at Rock Barn Golf & Spa on Saturday.

The Bucs entered the final round tied for second with the Tarleton State TexAnns, but Barry fired a final-round 298 while the TexAnns shot 300 to snap the tie and give the silver to the Bucs. The Bucs also finished second in 2002 and came in fourth in 2012 and third last year.

Sophomore Nicky Ferre, who earned second-team All-America honors this week, saved her best for last, shooting a one under par 70 on the final round, with five birdies to pace the Bucs. She ended the tournament as the Bucs' top finisher in 16th place with an even 300 (77-75-78-70 -- +16)

Nancy Vergara also shot well on the final round, with a 73 (+2) that included three birdies. She finished tied for 17th with teammate Maria Paola Fiorio at 301 (+17). Vergara carded a 79-72-77-73, while Fiorio was 73-71-75-82.

Daniela Murray finished tied for 19th, just one stroke back after shooting 77-72-73-80—301 (+18). Freshman Martina Berucciolli finished tied for 23rd after shooting 78-74-76-75—303 (+19).

The Lynn Knights won the team title and Louise Manalo claimed the individual title. The Knights finished at +28 for the tournament (294-297-291-282—1164). Manalo carded a 72-73-74-68—287 (+3) to edge teammate Jessica Bradley for the individual medal by one stroke.

Behind Lynn, Barry and Tarleton, the second-ranked Rollins Tars finished a distant fourth and Indianapolis came in fifth.

In addition to Ferre's second team All-America honor, Vergara was an honorable mention pick and she and Fiorio also made the All-Region team. All five of the Bucs who played the championship return in 2015.
