Buccaneers Row To Second-Place Finish At National Regatta

Rowing National Runnerup

Rowing | 5/28/2006 3:22:00 PM

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.—The Barry University rowing team posted their best finish ever at the NCAA National Regatta, placing second behind defending national champions Western Washington.

In the varsity 4 final, the Buccaneers (Caitlin McGowan, cox; Elise Carlson, stroke; Jillian Rex, Becca Berthold, Linsey Bierschbach, bow) battled a brutal headwind to place second to the Vikings. Western Washington finished in a time of 8:24.1550, while Barry rowed in at 8:30.4640 and UC San Diego rounded out the field at 8:35.1310.

“The fours rowed a great race,” head coach Paul Mokha said. “They really rowed their best. Elise (Carlson), who was injured in the heats on Friday, just sucked it up and raced. She and the whole boat did a great job and were able to finish second. We knew that's what they needed to do for us to have a shot at the team title.”

With the title on the line in the varsity 8 race, the Bucs (Ivana Fredotovic, cox; Angelique Ceccon, stroke; Jovana Djukic, Meg Denholm, Robin Cascioli, Hayley Robinson, Libby Lowe, Lindsay Edmonds, Gurnoor Kang, bow) enjoyed a slight lead most of the way down the course. But the Vikings surged in front over the last 250 meters claiming a one-second victory and the title. The Vikings' winning time was 7:17.64, while Barry came in at 7:18.681. Nova Southeastern finished third at 7:25.441 and Florida Tech placed fourth at 7:32.341.

“The eights rowed a perfect race,” Mokha said. “They took the lead at the right point, but at the end, they just didn't have the pop in the last 20 stokes and Western Washington was able to pull ahead.”

“As painful as it is to lose a championship by one second,” Mokha said, “there are no regrets. This is a great bunch of kids and they laid it all out, gave it everything they had. I'm very proud of them.”
