Box Score ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—The Barry women's tennis team gave the defending champs all they wanted, but came up on the short end of a 5-3 decision to the BYU-Hawai'i Seasiders at the NCAA Division II Tennis National Championship Tournament at Sanlando Park on Monday.

The Seasiders, winners of four of the last five Division II titles since moving up from NAIA, proved to be too strong for the Buccaneer (27-4) squad.

The Seasiders took two of the three doubles. Barry's Valeria Papandrea and Greta Trotman averted the sweep by taking the third flight 8-5 from Trisha Piercy and Gurianna Korinihona. BYU-Hawai'i (37-0) took the top two flights by the same score.

In singles, number two-ranked Adrienn Hegedus shutout Conny Grunes 6-0, 6-0 at number one and Korinihona knocked off Carole Steinhauser 6-1, 6-4 at number six to bring the Seasiders to within one point of victory.

But Gizella Turbok upset Anna Anikanova 6-4, 6-2 at number three and Valeria Papandrea moved up to number five to replace the injured Maria Lopez and beat Trisha Piercy 6-0, 7-5 to pull the Bucs to 4-3.

The matches at number two and four both went to third sets. In her third set, Barry's Victoria Courmes ran out of gas against Judy Weng, falling 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch the win for the Seasiders.

Papandrea closes her career as the winningest singles player in Barry history with 71 dual match wins. Courmes finished tied with former record holder Vanessa Campello in second place with 69. The Bucs' 27 wins eclipses the mark of 26 set last year and marks the third year in a row that the Buccaneers have set a new wins record.
