ALLENDALE, Mich. -- In only the fourth year of the Barry University women's golf program, the Buccaneers clinched second place to finish as the national runner-up at the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament hosted by Grand Valley State.
The Buccaneers finished the four-day tournament with a score of 1,308 (323, 317, 333, 335) 19 strokes in front of third-place Northern Kentucky who finished with a four-round score of 1,327 (335, 334, 323, 335). The Bucs were also 74 strokes back of national champion FSC who completed the tournament with a 1,234 (316, 306, 302, 310).
"I am extremely proud of these young ladies," head coach Roger White said. "They came out and played this tournament with a lot of courage despite the bad weather. I couldn't be happier for their success this season."
Sixty-one year-old,
Judy Street, led the Buccaneers to the second-place finished and also finished in a tie for eighth place (out of a field of 48) individually with Kathryn Bobbie of Ferris State. The former 1959 Intercollegiate Champion for the University of Miami finished the tournament with a four-round score of 321 (78, 76, 83, 84) to lead all Buccaneers.
"We had a lot of joyous times this season and it will be an experience I will always cherish," Street commented.
Senior,
Kara Hutton, finished the tournament tied for 13th with a four-round 328 (80, 78, 85, 85). Fellow Buccaneer,
Noel Bishop, finished tied for 17th with a four-round 330 (84, 80, 83, 83) while
Renee Trudeau finished tied for 23rd with a 332 (81, 83, 83, 85).
Andrea Turner showed steady improvement during the tournament finishing in a tie at 35 with a 343 (90, 86, 84, 83).
The Buccaneers conclude their 2002 spring season and are looking forward to next season and another run at the NCAA Division II national title.
"Florida Southern did a great job of overcoming the weather conditions during this tournament and congratulations to them for a job well done. However, next year I fully anticipate another great season and a return to the national tournament," White concluded.
